Faucet Cartridges Explained: Why “Ceramic” Is Only the Beginning

Ask a faucet supplier what cartridge is inside a product and the answer is often simple: “a ceramic cartridge.” The statement may be correct, but it tells a professional buyer very little.

Ceramic sealing discs are now common across a wide range of modern faucets. What separates one cartridge system from another is not the word ceramic alone.

The real differences include the cartridge function, diameter, internal geometry, operating torque, flow capacity, pressure and temperature performance, sealing materials, endurance, noise behavior, serviceability and compatibility with the faucet body.

For an importer or private-label brand, the cartridge is also a lifecycle decision. A cartridge that performs well in the laboratory but is difficult to identify, source or replace can still create expensive warranty problems years later.

What Is a Faucet Cartridge?

A faucet cartridge is the internal control mechanism that starts, stops, mixes or redirects water. Depending on the product, it may control only on/off operation, combine hot and cold water, maintain a selected temperature, balance pressure changes or switch water between multiple outlets.

In a typical single-lever mixing cartridge, two precision ceramic discs move against one another. Openings in the discs align or overlap as the handle moves, changing both flow and the proportion of hot and cold water. The smoothness of the handle, shutoff reliability and mixing behavior depend on the complete cartridge design, not only on the presence of ceramic discs.

The Main Cartridge Types Used in Kitchen and Bathroom Products

Why Cartridge Size Matters - but Does Not Tell the Whole Story

Single-lever cartridges are commonly identified by nominal diameters such as 25 mm, 28 mm, 35 mm or 40 mm. Smaller cartridges can support slimmer faucet bodies, while larger platforms may offer different flow and operating characteristics. However, two cartridges with the same nominal diameter are not automatically interchangeable.

Stem height, locating pins, inlet and outlet geometry, base seals, rotation limits, handle connection and cartridge nut dimensions may all differ. A responsible OEM should select the cartridge while designing the faucet body, not force an unrelated cartridge into a finished casting.

How Aquavit Selects a Cartridge

Aquavit products are manufactured in China, but our component strategy is global. We select a cartridge according to the product architecture, target market, required function, certification route, expected service life and commercial positioning. Country of origin is one factor; it is not the complete decision.

Our standard quotations commonly use Citec or SEDAL cartridges. Both groups have established component manufacturing and support operations in China, which gives us a practical combination of proven performance, stable supply, engineering access, after-sales support and competitive cost. We have used these platforms across multiple product programs over many years.

For products with different functional or market requirements, we may specify other suppliers. The following examples describe our normal engineering approach, but the final cartridge must always be confirmed against the product model, drawing, quotation and certification file.

Thermostatic Control: VERNET

For thermostatic shower systems, Aquavit commonly uses VERNET thermostatic technology. Where a complete VERNET cartridge matches the required envelope and hydraulic design, it can be integrated as a complete component.

Some valve bodies require a format that is not available as a standard complete VERNET cartridge. In those cases, Aquavit may use a VERNET thermostatic element - the temperature-sensing core - within a compatible cartridge housing manufactured in China.

This is a hybrid assembly: the thermostatic element is VERNET, while the complete cartridge assembly is not described as wholly made by VERNET or made in France.

This distinction matters. The thermostatic element is critical, but the housing, shuttle, seals, springs, machining tolerances and calibration process also influence final performance. The complete valve assembly must therefore be validated, not only the branded element.

Pressure-Balance Platforms: Yizhan, Wanhai and Hain-Yo

Pressure-balance cartridges are used where the valve must respond to supply-pressure changes and reduce sudden outlet-temperature fluctuations. For Aquavit pressure-balance valve programs, our standard selection may use a Yizhan cartridge.

Depending on the customer's approved product platform, certification plan, performance target and cost position, Wanhai or Taiwan-based Hain-Yo may also be evaluated.

The choice cannot be made by brand name alone. The cartridge and rough-in body operate as one hydraulic system. Flow rate, pressure response, rotational stop, hot/cold orientation, handle interface, service access and certification coverage must be checked together.

Push-Button and Diverter Control: NEOPERL and Hent

For selected push-button switching systems, Aquavit uses NEOPERL diverter or push-control technology. NEOPERL's published OEM range includes manually operated diverters and push-button cartridge solutions designed for faucet and shower applications.

For other rotary or pull/push diverter formats, Aquavit uses Hent brass diverter cartridges from Taiwan. The cartridge is selected according to the diverter structure, flow requirement and valve-body interface rather than by brand name alone.

Single-Lever and Specialty Options: Citec, SEDAL, Hydroplast, Flühs and Kerox

Citec and SEDAL are the most common starting points in Aquavit's standard quotations because they provide mature cartridge ranges and practical manufacturing support in Guangdong. Citec publicly lists operations in Spain and Kaiping, China. SEDAL describes itself as a global sanitary-component manufacturer with factories in Europe and China.

  • Aquavit also has experience with specialty or customer-specified platforms from other established manufacturers:
  • Hydroplast, an Italian cartridge specialist with a history of compact and specialty single-lever cartridge development.
  • Flühs, a German manufacturer known for precision ceramic headworks used in two-handle and premium valve applications.
  • Kerox, a Hungary-based manufacturer of ceramic single-lever cartridges and related ceramic components.

These suppliers are not presented as a simple ranking. A premium brand can still be the wrong choice if its cartridge does not match the product's geometry, waterway, certification file, service plan or target cost. The best cartridge is the one that meets the complete product requirement and remains supportable after the sale.

What Professional Buyers Should Specify

A request for a “ceramic cartridge” is not a complete specification. Before approving a faucet, a buyer should define or verify the following:

  • Function: mixing, on/off, thermostatic, pressure balancing, diverting or push-button control.
  • Cartridge manufacturer and exact model number, not only a country or brand name.
  • Nominal size and full interface dimensions, including stem, base seals, locating pins and nut.
  • Required flow rate and pressure range in the complete faucet or valve body.
  • Operating angle, handle travel, torque and temperature adjustment range.
  • Endurance requirement and the test standard used to measure it.
  • Maximum working temperature, static pressure and thermal-shock expectations.
  • Water-contact materials and any market-specific drinking-water compliance required.
  • Compatibility with the final product's certification listing.
  • Spare-part identification, packaging, stocking period and replacement instructions.

Service Life Is a System Result

Cartridge durability is important, but a cycle-life claim should never be read in isolation. Test method, pressure, temperature, water quality, operating speed and acceptance criteria determine what the number actually means. A supplier's laboratory cycle count is not automatically equivalent to the endurance requirement in a faucet certification standard.

What Aquavit's Third-Party Reports Show

Aquavit has third-party test reports for selected faucet and shower-set samples evaluated against ASME A112.18.1-2018/CSA B125.1-18 and, for automatic compensating shower valves, ASSE 1016-2017/ASME A112.1016-2017/CSA B125.16-17.

In Report 3115-23007, the valve assembly for the covered faucet samples completed 250,000 cycles. The report states that the valve developed no defects that adversely affected functionality or serviceability, and the post-test operating torque remained within the specified limit. This result appears on PDF page 16.

Report 3115-23008 records the same 250,000-cycle valve requirement for the covered shower-set samples. It also records 15,000 cycles for the diverter, with zero measured leakage from the primary outlet during the stated post-test check. These results appear on PDF page 19.

For the automatic compensating valve portion of Report 3115-23008, the operating control was tested for 20,000 cycles and the internal element for 80,000 cycles. The report records no leakage during the test and confirms that operating torque remained within the applicable requirement. This result appears on PDF page 24.

These are system-level results for the specific samples and model families covered by the reports. They should not be presented as a universal cycle-life guarantee for every Aquavit cartridge, every supplier platform or every operating environment.

OEM/ODM Choice Without Losing Engineering Control

As an OEM and ODM manufacturer, Aquavit develops product drawings internally and selects components as part of the engineering process. Customers can request an alternative cartridge brand, but changing the cartridge may affect the faucet body, handle, flow performance, certification, tooling, cost, lead time and spare-parts plan.

For this reason, a cartridge substitution should be treated as an engineering change, not a purchasing shortcut. The new component should be reviewed against the drawing, sample, test plan and certification scope before mass production.

Our objective is not to fit the most expensive component into every product. It is to build a product platform in which the cartridge, valve body and market requirement work together - with stable quality, realistic after-sales support and a cost structure that protects the brand and its distribution partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q Are all modern faucet cartridges ceramic?

No. Ceramic-disc technology is widely used in modern mixing cartridges and headworks, but faucets and shower valves may also use thermostatic elements, pressure-balance mechanisms, elastomer seals, pistons, springs and other materials. Even a cartridge described as ceramic contains many non-ceramic parts.

Q Is a 35 mm cartridge better than a 25 mm cartridge?

Not automatically. Diameter influences product design and hydraulic capacity, but performance depends on the complete cartridge and faucet system. A well-matched 25 mm cartridge can be the correct choice for a slim faucet, while another application may require a 35 mm or 40 mm platform.

Q Can two cartridges of the same size be exchanged?

Not without verification. Stem, locating pins, sealing geometry, inlet pattern, rotation and cartridge height may differ even when the nominal diameter is the same.

Q Does a European cartridge brand mean the cartridge was made in Europe?

Not necessarily. Some global component groups operate factories in more than one country. The exact model, production location and documentation should be confirmed for the product being quoted. Brand origin and manufacturing origin are different facts.

Q Can a customer select a different cartridge brand?

Yes, where a technically compatible option exists. Aquavit will evaluate the requested component against performance, dimensions, certification, cost, tooling, lead time and spare-parts requirements before approval.

Conclusion

“Ceramic cartridge” is a useful starting point, but it is not a quality specification. Professional faucet sourcing requires a clear understanding of function, dimensions, hydraulic behavior, durability, compliance and after-sales support.
