Why Is My Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet Leaking? Common Causes and How to Fix Them

A pull-down kitchen faucet can leak from several locations, including the handle, spray head outlet, spray head-to-hose connection, pull-down hose, quick connector, or supply connections below the sink. The location and timing of the leak usually provide the clearest clue to the cause.

This guide uses the Aquavit KF10101 magnetic pull-down kitchen faucet as a practical reference. KF10101 uses a Sedal 35 mm ceramic cartridge, a magnetic brass dual-function spray head, a SUS304 stainless steel swivel spout, an internal pull-down hose and a push-fit quick connection below the sink.

Other faucet models may use different cartridges, seals and connectors, so always confirm the model before ordering or replacing parts.

Before You Start: Find the Actual Source

Water can travel along the faucet body or hose before it becomes visible. A wet cabinet floor does not automatically mean the supply hose is leaking.

1. Dry the faucet, countertop, pull-down hose and cabinet completely.

2. Place dry paper towels below the handle area, spray hose connection, quick connector and supply connections.

3. Operate the faucet in stream and spray modes, then pull out and return the spray head several times.

4. Observe whether the leak occurs only while water is running, only after shutoff, or continuously.

5. Close both water-supply valves before disconnecting or removing any pressurized component.

1. Water Drips From the Spray Head After Shutoff

A few delayed drops can be residual water draining from the curved spout and pull-down hose. Continuous dripping, or dripping that repeatedly returns after the faucet has been off, indicates that the water is not being shut off completely.

Possible causes

  • Installation debris inside the cartridge
  • Sedal cartridge not seated correctly
  • Loose cartridge retaining or bonnet nut
  • Worn or damaged ceramic cartridge
  • Unusually high or unstable water pressure

What to do

  • Confirm that the drip continues beyond normal residual drainage.
  • Shut off both hot- and cold-water supplies.
  • If the faucet was recently installed, flush the supply lines to remove debris before replacing parts.
  • Remove the handle and cap only according to the applicable installation or service instructions.
  • Check that the bonnet nut is secure and the cartridge is seated correctly. Do not overtighten.
  • If the faucet still does not shut off completely, replace the cartridge confirmed for KF10101 and its production version.

Important: Replacing the spray head will not normally correct continuous dripping caused by a cartridge that does not close completely.

2. Water Leaks From Under the Handle

For KF10101-style single-handle faucets, leakage below the handle may occur when the bonnet nut has loosened or the ceramic cartridge is not seated correctly. The water may then run down the faucet body and appear around the base.

What to do

  • Turn off both water supplies and open the handle to release pressure.
  • Remove the handle and decorative cap using the correct tool and service procedure.
  • Check the bonnet nut and cartridge position.
  • Secure the bonnet nut with an appropriate wrench, using controlled force.
  • Restore the water supply and test before reinstalling all decorative components.

Warning: Failure to secure the bonnet nut correctly can result in continued leakage and water damage. Excessive tightening can also damage the cartridge, threads or faucet body.

3. Water Leaks Between the Spray Head and Hose

If water appears at the connection between the magnetic spray head and pull-down hose, the spray head may be loose or the sealing washer may not be seated correctly.

What to do

  • Turn off the faucet and pull the spray head out over the sink.
  • Hold the hose so it cannot retract into the spout.
  • Check that the washer is present, flat and undamaged inside the connection.
  • Reconnect and tighten the spray head by hand until snug.
  • Turn on the faucet and inspect the joint in both stream and spray modes.

Do not apply thread-seal tape unless the applicable product instructions specifically require it. This connection is normally sealed by the washer rather than by the threads alone.

4. Water Leaks From the Pull-Down Hose

The pull-down hose moves whenever the spray head is extended or returned. Interference below the sink, twisting, kinking or repeated abrasion can eventually damage the hose or its end fittings.

What to inspect

  • Wet or discolored braiding
  • A localized pinhole or abrasion point
  • Kinks or flattened hose sections
  • Damage near the spray head or quick-connector fitting
  • Contact with mounting hardware, cabinet edges, drain components or stored items

A damaged pressurized hose should be replaced as a complete compatible assembly. Tape, adhesive or an external clamp is not a suitable permanent repair.

5. Water Leaks From the KF10101 Quick Connector

During KF10101 installation, the hand-spray hose is pushed into the quick connector until the connection engages with an audible or tactile click. An incompletely seated connector can leak when the faucet is operated or when the spray head is moved.

What to do

  • Shut off both water supplies and place a dry towel below the connector.
  • Confirm the two sides of the connector are aligned and free from debris.
  • Push the hose fitting fully into the quick connector until it is securely engaged.
  • Pull down gently to confirm the connection is locked.
  • Restore the water supply and inspect the connection while operating and moving the spray head.

If the correctly seated connection still leaks, stop using the faucet and inspect the connector seal, hose end or complete hose assembly. Replace only with a compatible part.

6. The Spray Head Does Not Retract Smoothly

Poor retraction is not itself a water leak, but an incorrectly positioned weight or obstructed hose can create repeated strain and abrasion that may contribute to hose damage.

  • Check that the hose weight is installed on the outlet side at the marked or specified position.
  • Confirm that the hose moves freely without contacting supply hoses, drain piping, cabinet walls or stored items.
  • Operate the spray head several times and reposition the weight if retraction is incomplete.

7. Water Leaks From Supply Connections

The hot- and cold-water connections should be inspected separately from the pull-down hose. A loose fitting, twisted hose, damaged seal or leaking shutoff valve can create moisture below the sink.

  • Shut off the water and dry each connection.
  • Check that the supply hoses are not twisted, kinked or under tension.
  • Verify the correct connection size and sealing method.
  • Tighten according to the installation instructions without overtightening.
  • Replace any hose showing leakage, damaged braiding, swelling or a damaged end fitting.

Installation Steps That Help Prevent Leaks

  • Flush the hot- and cold-water lines before final connection. For the referenced installation procedure, the supply valves are opened to flush debris for approximately 60 seconds.
  • Do not remove the screen or net filter fitted at the supply-hose connection.
  • Avoid twisting or kinking supply hoses while tightening the connections.
  • Flush the faucet outlet into a bucket before attaching the pull-down spray hose.
  • Push the pull-down hose completely into the quick connector until securely engaged.
  • Install the hose weight in the correct position and confirm smooth spray-head retraction.
  • Turn on the water and inspect every connection before closing the cabinet.

When Should You Stop Using the Faucet?

Close both water-supply valves immediately if:

  • Water sprays or flows continuously inside the cabinet
  • The quick connector will not lock securely
  • The pull-down or supply hose is visibly damaged
  • The faucet body or a pressure-carrying fitting appears cracked
  • Water is entering the cabinet, countertop, wall or floor
  • The correct replacement component cannot be identified

For concealed damage, repeated leakage or a repair requiring disassembly beyond the product instructions, contact a qualified installer or the product supplier.
